What are orthotics?

Orthotics at Foot and Ankle Surgeons of Northern California are custom-made shoe inserts that conform comfortably to your feet and fit inside your shoes. The inserts reposition your feet or offload weight from sore or painful areas. Since Dr. Claydon makes the shoe inserts right in his office and doesn’t ship them out, you receive new inserts the same week as your evaluation.

What can orthotics address?

Dr. Claydon may suggest orthotics if you experience:

  • Non-healing wounds
  • Diabetic foot problems
  • Arthritis
  • Injuries
  • Bursitis
  • Foot deformities
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • High arches
  • Flat feet
  • Corn
  • Calluses
  • Foot or ankle pain
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Bunions

  • Foot or ankle problems
  • Limb length deformities
  • Runner’s knee

Custom-made orthotics can ease pain and inflammation, enhance healing after an injury, improve your gait, and make mobility easier.

Orthotics are particularly useful for treating diabetic wounds and other foot issues related to diabetes.

Are orthotics right for me?

Dr. Claydon completes a comprehensive physical exam that includes a foot and ankle evaluation to determine if you’re a candidate for custom orthotics. He also reviews your lifestyle, symptoms, and medical history.

You may need blood tests, X-rays, an ultrasound, or another imaging procedure for Dr. Claydon to make a final diagnosis and develop an effective treatment plan.

What happens when receiving custom orthotics?

Dr. Claydon uses digital technology to scan your feet and create custom-fitted orthotics right in his office. The process of getting fitted for orthotics doesn’t take long, and it’s not painful. When your new orthotics are ready, you return to the Foot and Ankle Surgeons of Northern California office to receive them and ensure they fit properly and comfortably.

How should I wear my new orthotics?

It’s important to wear your orthotics exactly as directed by Dr. Claydon. You might wear them during certain times of the day or all of the time. It’s vital to have comfortable shoes to wear with orthotics.

Attend follow-up visits at Foot and Ankle Surgeons of Northern California to ensure the orthotics work as designed.
